OUR STORY
From One Sponsorship
to a Community-Based Movement
The journey of BASICS International began with a simple but life-changing realization: education can open doors, but lasting opportunity requires much more than access to school alone.
After years of volunteer work in underserved communities in New York City and later participating in volunteer missions in Russia, founder Patricia Wilkins traveled to Ghana, West Africa, where she encountered children facing significant barriers to education and opportunity.
What started with sponsoring a small number of children quickly grew into something much larger. Over time, it became clear that students and families also needed mentorship, meals, safe spaces, leadership development, skills training, and economic support in order to truly thrive.
In 2000, BASICS International was officially established with a commitment to long-term, community-rooted impact and the belief that sustainable change happens through relationships, consistency, and investment in people over time.
Today, BASICS International continues to grow alongside the communities it serves — building pathways to opportunity through collaboration, innovation, and long-term commitment.
